| Is
Mangosteen Juice Available in Retail Stores?: |
|
If
you are wondering just exactly what Mangosteen juice or XanGo (as
it also called) is, well so was I. I did some research, here is
what I found:
The
Mangosteen fruit is the size of a small apple, purple with a hard
rind. The fruit, inside is said to resemble a peach or pineapple
in taste. It is a very prized fruit in Asia, as popular as the orange
is here in the US.
The
juice from Mangosteens is extracted, much like orange juice is extracted
from oranges. The resulting juice is then sold for 35-40$ for a
25oz. bottle whereas 25oz. of orange juice might cost $.75. That
is quite a large difference. Manufacturing costs are quite high
because the Mangosteen fruit can't be imported to the U.S.
According
to the many proponents of Mangosteen juice, it has the highest concentration
of antioxidants like xanthones of any juice, outdistancing prune
juice 3-1. However, the human body can absorb only so many antioxidants,
while the rest is excreted in the kidneys. Having a high level of
antioxidants in a food source hasn't been shown to be a benefit
to health.
There
seems to be a large network marketing system XanGo) pushing Mangosteen
juice. I have found it at Costco labeled as "Naturally Thai
Mangosteen" priced at $17.89 for 32 oz. The usual amount to
drink is 1fl. oz. daily.
I haven't tried Mangosteen juice as I find the price prohibitively
expensive, but I understand that is quite tasty and the fruit melts
in your mouth "like ice cream".
If the price of Mangosteen juice compares favorably with orange
juice sometime in the future, I might start drinking it!
