Why
Vaccinate Pets Yourself?? It's cheap, cheap, cheaper to vaccinate
them yourselves.
I
have 2 newborn kittens and 1 full grown cat. Vaccination requires
that the kittens, ideally, go to the vets 3 times the first year
and once a year after that. Each time costing 50-75$. The vaccine
shots that I give include the -- Fel-O-Vax LvK IV Cat Vaccine; Feline
Leukemia-Rhinotracheitis-Calici-Panleukopenia-Chlamydia Psittaci
Cat Vaccine (given initially at 8 weeks and a booster 3 weeks later)
and the rabies shot at 12 weeks. If I go cheap, I can cut out the
booster shot, leaving 2 visits each per kitten and 1 for my adult
cat costing a first year total of $250-$325 +. Maybe, it's not right
to have this attitude towards your pets, but I just think that's
too expensive.
I
looked around the web and quite easily located many suppliers of
pet vaccines including rabies which, I wrongly thought, were regulated
or something. I located one site: http://www.allivet.com/ that sells
vaccines and rabies shots. Their price is $8.99 per vaccine &
$29.99 for a 10 dose vial of rabies + $0.35 per syringe. I purchased
5 vaccines, 1 10 dose vial of rabies and 10 syringes for around
$85 and this included the booster shots that should be given. Plus,
I saved the hassle of taking the cats to the vet in the first place.
I
loaded up 3 syringes with the vaccines , folded over the skin on
the back of their neck (that's how my vet did it), and gave them
their injections. They didn't so much as budge. I don't think they
have many nerves their, I mean that's where momma cat picks them
up in her mouth. I'll give them the booster in a few weeks and then
their rabies shot a few weeks after that. I don't know if you can
combine the rabies with the vaccine, if so, then I will give them
all at once, and be done with it.
I
will have to bring all the cats to the vet to get them spayed as
I can't do that myself.... or can I?...Just kidding. While they
are getting spayed, I'll have the vet give them a checkup
I
figure that I'll save a few hundred dollars a year self vaccinating
my cats and that's money I can spend on cool toys for them!
