When
it comes time to select grass for your lawn you might be overwhelmed
by the choices. However, the choices for most Texas homeowners
are limited to the following grasses: St Augustine, Bermuda, Buffalo,
Centipede, and Fescue. We have provided information on each of
the above types in the sections below.
Bermuda
Grass
Bermuda grass is widely used for all kinds of turf
in warm, humid and warm, semi-arid regions. Bermuda grass does
not tolerate shade, poor drainage, or high soil acidity. It is
very drought resistant, but for normal growth it needs water.
It has good wear tolerance and is also very tolerant to close
mowing. Known as one of the most persistent and aggressive grasses
grown. Flower beds or other adjacent areas can be overrun if not
kept in check by constant edging.
419
Tifway is a hybrid Bermuda grass that is a highly disease
resistant selection with a dark green color. It maintains its
color with less nitrogen than most other Bermudas. 419 Tifway
makes a very dense sod and is more weed resistant than most Bermuda
grasses. Tifway never produces seed and must be propogated by
planting sprigs or laying sod.
Tifway II is a hybrid Bermuda grass that is disease tolerant.
It has a nice green color with stiffer leaves than 419 Tifway.
It is also more frost tolerant and often greens up earlier than
419 Tifway.
St.
Augustine - Raleigh
St. Augustine grass is a broad leafed, coarse textured
grass, and medium green in color. It is well adapted to areas
with full sun or moderate shade; it is the most shade tolerant,
warm season grass. St. Augustine grass frequently needs iron as
a fertilizer supplement. It is drought tolerant. Raleigh is the
most cold tolerant variety.
St. Augustine - Palmetto®
Palmetto® was a hybrid St. Augustine grass was developed
jointly in Florida and South Caroline farms. It has an attractive
dark green color. Palmetto® appears to blend well and thrive
in heavy shade. It is also more cold tolerant with an aggressive
root system.
Prairie
Buffalo
Prairie Buffalo is the only turf grass native to Central
Texas. It is winter hardy, water efficient, and low maintenence.
The grass grows to a natural height of 6 to 8 inches. This tall
height is preferred for low maintenance xeriscape.
